Federation of Uganda Basketball Association in conjunction with Mountain Dew and Red Rhino Sports have announced a nationwide 3×3 basketball series this morning.
The first of its kind journey will have eight stops across the country in search for the best 12 men and women teams to battle at the grand finale.
Speaking at the launch, Mountain Dew Brand Manager, Namutebi Grace said the brand is honoured to be a part of an exciting addition to the basketball calendar.
“The games are going to help us take both our brand and the sport closer to the grassroots. It’s going to be great and exciting for both the players and fans and we are looking forward to it,” Ms. Namutebi said.
Uganda’s 3×3 chairman, Hamza Nyabongo welcomed the development saying 3×3 is one of the ways to grow the sport in the country.
“Taking this format out of Kampala to places like; Mbale, Gulu, Mbarara, Jinja and Mukono will definitely help us grow the sport and we can even qualify for the next Olympics with even more activities such as these,” Nyabongo said.
Action will be hosted in four regions; Eastern, Western, Northern, Central, and Kampala with five cities on the card before the final stop in Kampala.
A total of 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams will qualify for the finals that is scheduled for Saturday 7th December 2024 where the winning teams will each walk away with two million Uganda Shillings.
The prize money at each stop will be Uganda Shillings 400,000 for the winner and 200,000 for the runner-up in both the men and women’s categories.
Participation in the series is open to all basketball players under 25 years. Players simply have to come together and form a team of four people.
Red Rhino Sports Director, Akwech Samuel said they are pleased to bring yet another tournament to provide athletes a platform to showcase their skills, entertain fans and win prizes.
“As an agency, we believe that Uganda has a great future in 3-on-3 and we are here to play our part in making that future,” Akwech noted.
