FUFA, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, is facing pushback from Uganda Premier League clubs over its proposed changes to the league’s format. In a meeting with club owners, Vipers Sports Club President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa suggested that instead of investing in a new format, FUFA should use the allocated funds to improve the existing league, which has been in place since 1968.
The discussion follows a letter from FUFA detailing the proposed changes, which have been met with dissatisfaction from the clubs. Following a meeting at the Serena Hotel Kampala, Dr. Mulindwa stated, “We don’t believe the old league format is failing. We believe it lacks financial support. I propose that the money planned for the new league be invested in the old one; that’s how the game will develop.”
With the 2025-2026 season approaching, the league’s future remains uncertain. Despite FUFA already releasing fixtures for the new format, a final decision is pending. According to FUFA President Moses Magogo, both sides are close to an agreement, with the primary remaining point of contention being whether to adopt the new format or revert to the old one.
Magogo clarified that the lack of progress was not due to a lack of negotiation but rather a breakdown in communication between the clubs’ CEOs and their owners. This time, FUFA met directly with the decision-makers, a group of 13 representatives from the 16 Uganda Premier League teams. Both parties have agreed to meet again next week to make a final decision.
