FUFA approves new coaching framework for Uganda

Ugandan football has moved to tighten standards in the dugout after the Federation of Uganda Football Associations Executive Committee approved a new Coaching Framework under its Technical Master Plan 2023โ€“2030.

The changes introduce a clearer, more practical path for coaches, shifting focus from certificates alone to proven ability, experience, and continuous learning.

Central to the reforms is the FUFA Coaching Badge (FCB), which will run alongside existing CAF licences. FUFA says the badge will confirm that a coach has met all required standards at each level.

The system will have seven levels, each with specific requirements. Progression will depend on academic background, coaching qualifications, experience, and an oral aptitude test. Coaches with strong playing or coaching histories may receive exemptions.

At the entry level, FCB-7 courses will be taught in local languages, including Luganda, Lugbara, Luo, Runyakitara, and Swahili, making the program more accessible at the grassroots.

FUFA has also introduced mandatory coaching licenses, which will now serve as the legal permission to coach in Uganda.

The General Coaching License will last three years, while the Professional Coaching License will run for two years and restrict holders to one team at a time. Both will require refresher courses before renewal.

A Technical Council of Experts will oversee assessments, grading, and discipline. It will also recommend suspensions or cancellations where necessary.

The framework further brings in specialised training in areas such as performance analysis, physical conditioning, youth coaching, and football psychology, key aspects of the modern game.

Current coaches have been asked to submit their qualifications for assessment by June 30, 2026.

However, the new requirements will only be enforced in competitions from July 1, 2027, giving time for adjustment.
