Uganda’s football second tier, the FUFA Big League, has re-expanded to 16 teams from the 15 which have been participating in the past two seasons.
In the 2022-2023 season, the FUFA Big League had 16 teams before lowering the number to 15 teams in the 2023-2024 season.
Following discussions among FUFA Executive Committee Members, a resolution was passed as per a letter signed by FUFA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson Suubi.
The letter, addressed to the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA), communicated the re-increase of the FUFA Big League teams.
For the 2025-2026 Season, the FUFA Big League’s 16th slot was also allocated to NRFA, as explained in the letter: “In line with FUFA’s commitment to equitable regional representation, the Executive Committee has allocated the 16th slot to the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) for only the season of 2025-2026.”
The FUFA Big League is the immediate feeder tier of Uganda’s football top flight, replacing demoted teams ever since the tier was introduced in 2009.
At first, the league was zoned into two groups before getting merged in recent seasons to find likely candidates for the top tier.
