The 2024-25 FUFA Big League season took a sharp and thrilling turn on Matchday 24, as Buhimba United Saints stormed to the top of the table with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Booma in a heated Bunyoro derby at Kigaya playground in Kikuube district.

The derby, played with the intensity of a final, saw Buhimba United Saints dig deep to edge their fierce regional rivals.

Eric Washington Nyonyintono delivered a moment of magic just before halftime, scoring directly from a corner kick, a goal that sent the home fans into a frenzy.

The winner came in the 65th minute, when Edson Agondeze calmly slotted home following a precise assist from Lucas Mola.

That crucial win lifted Buhimba United Saints to 45 points from 24 matches, pushing them to the summit of the league standings and ramping up the intensity of the promotion race.

With only three matches left in the campaign, the Saints are now three points ahead of former leaders Blacks Power, who have played one game fewer.

Blacks Power, who had led the table for several weeks, now find themselves in troubled waters after back-to-back defeats in a span of just three days.

Their most recent stumble came in Zombo, where they lost 0-1 to a rejuvenated Paidha Black Angels.

Benjamin Opakrwoth netted an 85th-minute penalty, sealing the win and moving Paidha to 40 points, just five off the top in a tightly contested top-four battle.

The promotion race promises to go down to the wire, with three coveted slots available for next season’s Uganda Premier League.

Buhimba’s surge, Blacks Power’s slide and Paidha’s resurgence have ensured an unpredictable sprint to the finish.

Meanwhile, at the bottom end of the table, the fight for survival is just as fierce. MYDA revived their hopes of avoiding the drop with a convincing 3-1 home win against Arua Hill in Bukedea.

Eric Kamuhanda starred with a brace while Masuudi Kafumbe also got on the score sheet. Arua Hill, now with 25 points, remain entrenched in the relegation zone alongside Booma (19), Busoga United (23) and Kigezi Home Boyz (24).

In Mityana, Ntugasaze produced a stunning comeback, twice clawing back from behind to defeat Busoga United 3-2, a result that left Busoga languishing in the red zone.

At Barthleme playground, Kiyinda Boys and Kigezi Home Boyz played out a 2-2 draw that did little to ease either side’s concerns.

Elsewhere, the clash between Onduparaka and Kataka was postponed due to the latter’s involvement in the Uganda Cup semifinal return leg against KCCA in Mbale, which ended 1-1, confirming KCCA’s aggregate victory (4-1) and place in the final.

With three matches to play and stakes higher than ever, the FUFA Big League continues to serve up drama, surprises and shifting fortunes.
