FUFA, the governing body of football in Uganda, has launched a new talent identification project aimed at addressing the issue of age cheating in youth football.

The initiative, which is part of FUFA’s 2023-2030 strategic master plan, was officially unveiled on September 27, 2024, at the FUFA complex in Mengo.

Key stakeholders in Ugandan youth football, including the Uganda Youth Football Association (UYFA), the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA), football academy coaches, and owners, have expressed their support for the project.

At the launch event, UYFA chairman Robert Kiwanuka highlighted the importance of early talent identification in combating age cheating, a prevalent issue in Ugandan football. He praised FUFA for taking this proactive step to address the problem.

USSSA executive officer Chris Mugisha Banange also expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its potential to benefit school football. He stressed the need for collaboration between USSSA and FUFA to achieve common goals in football development.

The talent identification project will be overseen by FUFA’s development department, with former SC Villa coach Petros Koukouras serving as the Technical Development Manager. The project involves training scouts at different levels, from district-level G4 scouts to regional G3 scouts and professional club G2 scouts.

FUFA Development Officer Ali Mwebe outlined the steps involved in the project, emphasizing the importance of a well-trained scouting network.

The launch event was attended by FUFA President Engender Moses Magogo Hashim, who underscored the significance of the project in nurturing young football talent in Uganda.
