The 2025/26 Kampala Regional League kickoff was abruptly postponed just hours before matches were set to begin, leaving clubs, players, and fans in confusion.

The decision came amid speculation over the controversial league format recently abandoned in the Uganda Premier League.

However on Tuesday October 21, the FUFA Executive Committee agreed with the 18 Kampala Regional Football Association (KRFA) 3rd Division clubs to implement a split league format, backed by financial incentives.

FUFA planned to inject over 800 million Uganda shillings into the league to cover prize money, locker-room bonuses, “man of the match” awards, referees’ fees, operational costs, and other support.

The league champion could earn up to 20 million shillings.

Third division clubs had strongly supported the plan, seeing it as a chance to raise standards and competitiveness.

But the sudden postponement of the October 18 kickoff had thrown those League commencement into disarray.

FUFA offered explanation, fueling fears that debates over the scrapped top-flight format having influenced the decision.

The controversial system had lasted only two and a half match-days in the Uganda Premier League before being scrapped amid criticism.
