FWSL Preview: Kawempe Muslims on alert as they host winless Asubo Ladies

The sun will barely set at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Saturday evening, but Kawempe Muslims know they cannot afford to sleepwalk into their ninth round fixture.

At 4 p.m., the league leaders will welcome winless Asubo Ladies, a team whose position on the log doesn’t quite capture the stubbornness they often bring to big games.

Kawempe arrive at this moment in full flow. Seven wins from eight matches have launched them to the summit of the Uganda Women Super League, where they sit with 22 points, 14 goals scored and just 4 conceded.

On paper, it looks like a mismatch. But Head Coach Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi has spent the week reminding his players that football does not respect paper.

“We don’t see Asubo as a poor team,” Ayub insisted, leaning forward with the calm firmness that has long defined him.

“We see them as a team capable of playing tough games. I told the players to treat this like any other competitive fixture, there is no easy test until it has been passed.”

His caution is not without reason. Both sides have already met reigning champions Kampala Queens this season, and both walked away with draws, a quiet reminder that Asubo Ladies can rise to the stage.

Still, the two teams come into Saturday in contrasting moods. Kawempe Muslims edged Lady Doves 1–0 last weekend, grinding out the kind of victory that keeps title dreams alive.

Asubo, meanwhile, were hammered 4–0 by St. Noa Girls and have collected only four points from eight outings.

And history adds its own warning. When these two last met in the 2022–23 season, Asubo despite later being relegated, pushed the giants hard before falling 2–1. Kawempe have not forgotten.

In their most recent matches, Kawempe Muslims defeated Lady Doves 1–0, while Asubo Ladies lost 4–0 to St. Noa Girls.
