Tanzania head coach Miguel Gamondi turned a football achievement into a moment of national reflection on Tuesday night, dedicating the Taifa Stars’ historic advance to the AFCON 2025 Round of 16 to victims of the country’s troubled October 29 elections.

Speaking after qualification was confirmed, Gamondi said the team’s unity and fighting spirit were meant to honour those who lost their lives and to remind Tanzanians of the strength found in togetherness beyond the game.

“This fighting spirit, this solidarity, this teamwork should be an homage to the difficult situation Tanzania is living,” Gamondi said.

“It should be an homage to all these people who died. Tanzania is a big nation, and to be united would be much better. This is more important than football.”

That spirit was clear on the pitch as Tanzania held Tunisia to a 1-1 draw in their final group match on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

Tunisia took the lead through Ismael Seifallah Gharbi just before halftime, but Feisal Salum Abdallah’s equaliser kept the Taifa Stars alive.

The result left Tanzania on two points, enough to finish among the four best third placed teams and secure a knockout spot.

Tanzania are joined in the Round of 16 by fellow CECAFA side Sudan, along with Mozambique and Benin.
