Uganda’s women’s basketball team, the Gazelles, made a strong start at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone V qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt, cruising to a commanding 78-56 victory over East African rivals Kenya.
The Gazelles were in control from the opening whistle, jumping out to a 23-11 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Kenya struggled early, particularly with turnovers, and found it difficult to maintain possession. Uganda capitalized on this, building a 12-point lead by halftime.
Jane Asinde was the standout performer for Uganda, scoring a game-high 24 points and grabbing 9 rebounds.
She was pivotal in securing key possessions, while Paige Robinson added 15 points and 2 rebounds, weaving through Kenya’s defense for crucial baskets.
Kenya briefly mounted a challenge in the third quarter, reducing Uganda’s lead early on.
However, after a timeout, the Gazelles regained their composure. A timely 3-pointer from Shakira Nanvubya pushed the lead to 20 points by the end of the quarter, at 57-37.
Uganda’s lead expanded to 25 points in the fourth quarter, effectively sealing the victory. The Gazelles’ largest lead of the game was 28 points, though Kenya mounted a late effort to close the gap.
Victoria Reynolds was Kenya’s top scorer with 13 points while Mercy Wanyama added 12.
Despite their efforts, it was not enough to overcome Uganda’s dominant performance.
With this impressive win, the Gazelles will look to maintain their momentum as they prepare for their next game against hosts Egypt on Tuesday at 7:00 PM EAT.
