2025 Women’s AfroBasket
- Uganda 73-70 Senegal
Uganda’s Women’s National Basketball Team, the Gazelles, pulled off a thrilling 73-70 overtime win against Senegal on Monday afternoon to stay unbeaten at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
Coming off an 88-51 rout of Guinea, the Gazelles made it two wins in two games with a gritty, back-and-forth performance that showed just how far they’ve come.
Uganda fell behind early, trailing by eight before head coach Nicholas Natuhereza called a timeout.
The team responded instantly, Claire Lamunu hit a clutch three-pointer to close the first quarter 17-16 in Uganda’s favor.
They built on that momentum to take a 37-28 lead into halftime, but Senegal roared back in the third quarter, holding Uganda to just eight points and grabbing a 49-45 lead.
With the game slipping away, Paige Robinson knocked down a vital three-pointer to tie it at 61-61 and send it to overtime.
In the extra five minutes, Uganda held their nerve. Jane Asinde was dominant inside, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Robinson led all scorers with 19 points, Lamunu added 10, Hope Akello had 15 and six boards, and Melissa Akullu added five.
Senegal’s Cierra Dillard scored 15 points and Yacine Diop added 13, but they struggled to convert key shots late in the game.
With four points from two wins, Uganda now tops Group A and continues its impressive run toward a potential historic finish.
