Fresh off a triumphant campaign in the FIBA Zone V qualifiers, the Uganda Gazelles now set their sights on a much bigger stage, the 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket set to tip off in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire from July 26 to August 3.

The official draw held at the Hotel des Armées in Abidjan confirmed Uganda’s placement in Group C alongside Senegal and Guinea, setting the stage for a fierce battle in one of the tournament’s most intriguing pools.

This year’s Women’s AfroBasket carries even more excitement as it will be hosted for the first time ever in Côte d’Ivoire at the iconic Palais des Sports de Treichville.

The tournament will feature 12 teams, split into four groups of three, each team with its own dream of continental glory.

For Uganda, the draw represents both a challenge and an opportunity. Senegal, one of Africa’s most successful women’s basketball nations, brings immense experience and pedigree.

Guinea, though less storied will also be hungry to make their mark. But Uganda’s Gazelles, riding high on the momentum of their Zone V conquest, come into Group C with confidence and purpose.

The format adds intensity, only the winners of each group will secure direct passage to the quarterfinals while second and third-placed teams will face off in a knockout qualifying series to fill the remaining spots in the last eight. Every game, therefore, carries significant weight.

The draw ceremony itself was a spectacle of African basketball unity, attended by key FIBA Africa dignitaries, including President Anibal Manave and Regional Director Alphonse Bile.
