Kyambogo University lecturer and sports enthusiast George Wagoogo has launched an ambitious bid to transform university sports in Uganda.
He announced his candidacy for president of the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) ahead of the September 26 elections at Uganda Christian University in Mukono.
The vote will usher in new leadership as longtime AUUS president Peninah Aligaweesa Kabenge steps down after two decades.
Wagoogo will face Busitema University’s Dr. Agnes Baluka Massajja, but he believes his mix of academic credentials and hands-on sports management sets him apart.
Wagoogo holds a Master’s in Sports Administration from the Russian International Olympic University and a postgraduate certificate in International Sports Event Management from the University of Paris-Sud.
He has served as Sports Development Manager for the Kampala Kids League, Head of Capacity Building at the Uganda Olympic Committee, and volunteered with the National Council of Sports and the Uganda Football Players Association.
“University sports should be a unifying force that nurtures talent, builds character, and fosters inclusivity,” Wagoogo said while unveiling his manifesto.
Four Core Values
His plan rests on four pillars:
• Inclusivity: Programs for students of all abilities and backgrounds, with special focus on disability sports.
• Empowerment: Mentorship, leadership training, and workshops for student-athletes.
• Integrity: Transparency and fair play in all competitions.
• Sustainability: Environmentally responsible sports management.
Key Proposals
Wagoogo promises to expand inter-university leagues, strengthen grassroots programs, and work with expert coaches to raise skill levels.
He plans health and wellness campaigns, mental health initiatives, and nutrition workshops, along with a strong sponsorship drive to secure funding.
He also wants more national and international exposure for student-athletes and to use sports as a platform for community development.
As AUUS prepares for a generational shift, Wagoogo casts himself as the candidate of unity and growth.
“Sports can change lives,” he said.
“My goal is to ensure every university athlete in Uganda feels supported, empowered, and ready to shine on any stage.”
