Kampala University (KU) staged a remarkable comeback against Gulu University in the University Football League (UFL), thanks to a stunning hat trick from Gilbert Wanume.

The thrilling encounter at the YES Center in Nsambya on Thursday evening saw KU overturn an early deficit to secure a vital 3-2 victory.

Gulu University took the lead in the 31st minute through Comboni Komakech, who struck a powerful shot from outside the box after a well-timed pass from Emmanuel Okwir.

The visitors held their advantage until the stroke of halftime when Wanume equalized for the hosts with a well-placed header from a Ssaka Vincent cross.

The second half saw KU return with renewed determination, with Mulamba Abbey coming close to putting them ahead early on.

Their breakthrough came five minutes past the hour mark when Wanume coolly converted a penalty after Mulamba was brought down in the area.

As the match progressed, Wanuume showcased his clinical finishing once again, securing his hattrick with 12 minutes left to play, effectively sealing KU’s lead.

Gulu University, however, found a late lifeline when they were awarded a penalty two minutes before full-time, which Saul Kasule successfully converted. Despite their late effort, the visitors couldn’t salvage a draw.

With this win, Kampala University moved to the top of Group D with nine points from four games, three points ahead of second-placed Bugema University, who will face KIU in their next fixture.

UFL action continues today as ISBAT hosts IUIU in Kanyanya at 3 pm.
