Gomba FC is still holding out hope for a spot in the Masaza Cup quarterfinals, even with their Bulange Group campaign in a precarious position. The team, coached by Nasib Mukasa, travels to the islands this Saturday, August 23, to face Ssese FC at Lutoboka Ssaza ground.
Currently sitting in fifth place in the Bulange Group with six points from seven matches, Gomba faces a tough challenge. They have a slim chance of advancing as one of the best two third-placed teams across the three groups, but Coach Nasib Mukasa remains confident.
“We have three games, and I hope to win all of them, starting with Ssese,” Mukasa said. “I am sure no team can stop us. I tell our fans that we can still qualify for the Quarterfinal stage.”
After their match against Ssese, Gomba will play two more crucial games. They will host Busujju FC on Wednesday, April 27, in a rescheduled match approved by the Masaza Cup Organizing Committee. This change was requested to avoid a conflict with ceremonies at Kabulasoke PTC playground. Their final group stage match will be away against Buluuli FC on Sunday, September 7, at Migyera UMEA.
To qualify, Gomba must win all three remaining matches and hope for favorable results from other teams. They are currently trailing behind several clubs, including Buddu, Ssese, Mawokota, Kooki, Kabula, Bulemeezi, and Kyadondo, all of whom are also battling for a spot in the next stage.
In the Bulange Group, Buluuli and Busujju currently lead with 14 points each. Buddu and Ssese follow with nine points and have three games remaining, intensifying the race for qualification.
The competition for the “best loser” slots is also heating up. In the Masengere group, Mawokota and Bulemeezi are tied with nine and eight points, respectively. Kooki and Kabula hold similar standings in the Muganzirwazza group.
