  • Senegal 1-0 Morocco (Pape Gueye 94’ Extra Time)

Senegal are 2025 African champions once again after a dramatic 1–0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco, sealed by a thunderous left-footed strike from Pape Gueye that will live long in AFCON memory.

With the final drifting toward penalties, Gueye broke forward on a rare counter-attack and fired a low, powerful shot into the corner in the 108th minute.

The goal, his third of the tournament sparked wild celebrations among Senegal’s travelling fans and finally broke Morocco’s resistance.

The match had been tense and tactical from the opening whistle. Morocco, unbeaten and yet to concede from open play all tournament, defended with discipline, while Senegal remained patient and organised.

Clear chances were scarce through 90 minutes, and extra time felt inevitable as both sides tightened their shape.

Senegal’s patience was rewarded when Gueye found space and struck decisively. Morocco pushed late for an equaliser, but Senegal’s defence held firm to see out a hard-earned win.

The final was also shaped by a moment of high drama late in regulation time. Morocco were awarded a penalty after a VAR review for a foul on Brahim Díaz, a decision that enraged the Senegal camp. Players briefly walked off the pitch in protest, led by head coach Pape Thiaw.

It was captain Sadio Mané who restored calm, urging his teammates to return and keep their focus.

His composure was rewarded moments later when Édouard Mendy saved Díaz’s penalty, keeping Senegal alive and forcing extra time.

While Gueye delivered the decisive moment, Mané’s impact across the tournament was unmistakable.

The veteran forward led by example, creating more chances from open play than any other player and guiding Senegal through a series of tense knockout matches.

Beyond his attacking contribution, Mané’s leadership defined Senegal’s campaign.

From his calming presence during the penalty controversy to his semi-final goal that booked their place in the final, his influence extended far beyond the scoresheet.

Senegal’s triumph, their second AFCON title after lifting the trophy in 2021 is a testament to discipline, resilience and belief.

Gueye’s left foot provided the winning moment, but this victory belonged to a united team, anchored by a captain whose legacy on the African stage continues to grow despite having no armband.
