Uganda’s Under-20 national team, the Hippos, secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Ethiopia in the CECAFA regional qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday September 7, 2024.

Godfrey Ssekibengo and Swabir Mpasa were both on the score sheet in the first-half to put Uganda in control. Ssekibengo opened the scoring in the 24th minute, and Mpasa doubled the lead six minutes before halftime with a powerful volley assisted by Allan Oyirowth.

The match was not without its moments of excitement, as both teams created chances and kept their goalkeepers busy.

Midfielder John Innocent Kisolo added a late goal in stoppage time to seal the 3-0 win and give Uganda a perfect start to the tournament.

With the victory, Uganda has positioned themselves as strong early contenders for one of the two CECAFA slots in the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Their next challenge will be against Burundi on Wednesday, who also won their opening match against South Sudan.
