HSBC World Rugby 7s Challenger Series: Uganda Rugby Cranes out of contention for 2025 HSBC SVNS

With one round of the challenger series left on the calendar, the Uganda rugby cranes men’s 7s team might as well have kissed their hopes of featuring on the main HSBC SVNS in 2025 goodbye.

After starting Montevideo in fantastic 3/3 form, the rugby Cranes agonizingly dropped out of main cup contention on the day after a slim 7-5 quarterfinal loss to Kenya Shujaa that left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

That loss condemned the Cranes to the fifth-place playoff, which they lost 10-07 to Germany.

Mathematically, Coach Onyango Tolbert’s boys are turning their focus on the 2025 series to make the 2026 SVNS roster. The Cranes sit in 8th position on 14 points from two rounds, with 4 points from Dubai and 10 from Montevideo.

Maximum points in the Munich challenger series (a beautiful dream) would put Uganda at 34 points, still 2 less than table leaders and second-placed Uruguay and Kenya respectively.

Chile and Germany, by showing up, even after earning the least points available would go past Uganda. It is time to charge batteries of the calculators and consult with the gods and other deity ahead of Munich on 18th-19th May.
