NEC FC will have to navigate their next two Uganda Premier League matches without the presence of head coach Hussein Mbalangu, who has been handed a suspension by the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA).
This development follows the aftermath of NEC’s contentious 2-1 victory over Kitara FC on April 10th at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.
The heated encounter saw NEC’s Enock Ssebaggala receive a red card in the second half, a decision that sparked frustration from Mbalangu.
In his post-match remarks, the head coach openly criticized referee Dick Okello for what he believed was an unjust dismissal. His comments, however, have now drawn disciplinary action from the football governing body.
In a formal statement, FUFA confirmed that Mbalangu breached Article 13 of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Code which pertains to inappropriate conduct and public criticism of match officials.
As a result, the FUFA Disciplinary Panel has imposed a two-match suspension on the tactician.
This means he will not be on the sidelines when NEC hosts Mbale Heroes on Friday, April 25th and during their away fixture against Mbarara City FC on Wednesday, April 30th.
Additionally, Mbalangu has been slapped with a fine of UGX 1,000,000, payable immediately. The statement also served as a stern warning to the coach, with FUFA cautioning that any repeat of such conduct will attract a harsher penalty.
Reasons for suspension
- Public criticism of match officials: Mbalangu made controversial remarks against referee Dick Okello after the match, specifically regarding the red card issued to his player.
- Breach of FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Code (Article 13): His conduct was deemed a violation of the code, particularly in relation to post-match behaviour and media statements.
- Failure to Uphold Professional Conduct: FUFA’s disciplinary action emphasizes the importance of maintaining respect for referees and abiding by the league’s professional standards.
While NEC remains in contention in the Uganda Premier League, they will now have to cope with the tactical absence of their head coach during two crucial fixtures Mbalangu’s absence.
