Uganda’s representative at the 2023 IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships Isaac ‘Zebra’ Ssenyange Jr, won his opening match against Greek, Ritzakis Thodoris on Wednesday.

Ssenyange is fighting in the men’s 67-71kg Light Middleweight category at the championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Ssenyange, who funded his trip to the championship, was declared the bout winner after the Referee stopped the contest as the Greek wouldn’t defend himself.

Following the victory, the youngster is in the second round, set to take on Georgia’s Eskarhan Madiev, who beat Ugandan Shadir Musa Bwogi at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Ssenyange is the son of the fallen former Ugandan Boxing captain Isaac Ssenyange ‘Mando’, who was slain by security operatives in 2020.

Uganda had 12 other boxers lined up to take part in the championship but didn’t make it due to delayed funds.
