In celebration of the 32nd coronation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the first-ever Kabaka Coronation Badminton Tournament launched with an impressive turnout at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
The event, organized by the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA), attracted over 450 participants, ranging from children to seniors. This diverse group included players from new-to-the-scene schools like Hana International School and Wamperwo Ntake, marking their debut in a UBA event.
Building the Future of Ugandan Badminton
Simon Mugabi, the CEO of the Uganda Badminton Association, expressed his excitement about the overwhelming response. “It is impressive to have a number this large. Not many tournaments start with 457 people, which shows how much people love our Kabaka,” he said.
Mugabi also highlighted the tournament’s role in nurturing future talent, noting that giving kids a chance to play is “important in discovering new talents.”
The tournament’s structure is designed to be inclusive, with categories for Juniors, Seniors, Professionals, and Corporate players.
The competition features Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles across various age groups, including U10, U13, U15, U19, and adult categories up to 70 years old.
Players Share Their Experience
Participants shared their enthusiasm for the historic event. Adam Mwebe, an Under-19 player from Hana International, described his experience as “fantastic,” adding that playing against more experienced players has given him a valuable “learning advantage.”
Mary Joseline Nabirye of Mengo SS also expressed her gratitude, saying, “I congratulate the Kabaka on his 32nd Coronation. I am happy that he gave us this opportunity to celebrate with him through this tournament.”
The tournament, which began on Friday, August 8, 2025, will conclude on Sunday, August 10, when the first-ever champions of the Kabaka Coronation Badminton Tournament will be crowned.
