Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) brightened their chances of qualifying for the quarterfinals of the University Football League with a 3-1 victory over Victoria University at Kabojja on Thursday.
The win moved IUIU to nine points in Group D, with one game remaining in the group stage. IUIU assistant coach Mubarak Kaggwa was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We are grateful that we got maximum points,” he said. “We had promised that although we had lost our game against YMCA, we had not lost morale.”
“We expected to get some points away before we face MUBS in our final group stage game. Our target is to qualify to quarterfinals and we are still on course.”
IUIU took the lead in the first minute through captain Shafik Kawooya and doubled their advantage just after halftime through Samuel Watuwa.
Abdul Murungi scored a consolation goal for Victoria before Watuwa added a third for IUIU to seal the win.
Victoria coach Emmanuel Amangu blamed his team’s errors for the defeat.
“We had played well but we made a few errors that cost us,” he said. “But we shall try to improve in our final game.”
