- University Football League | Semifinal First Leg
- IUIU 1-1 SLAU
Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) showcased resilience as they fought back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against St. Lawrence University (SLAU) in the first leg of the University Football League (UFL) semifinals in Mbale on Thursday evening.
In a tightly contested match, both teams had their moments but the stalemate leaves the tie delicately poised ahead of the return leg.
The visitors, SLAU, started on the front foot, pressing high and forcing IUIU to defend deep. Their early dominance paid off in the 25th minute when Ssekyanzi Patrick broke the deadlock.
Rising highest in the box, he met a perfectly delivered cross from Matege Innocent and sent a powerful header past the helpless IUIU goalkeeper. It was a well-worked goal that showcased SLAU’s attacking intent.
IUIU, however, refused to be overwhelmed. They gradually grew into the game and, just five minutes before halftime found their equalizer.
A dangerous cross from Mugambe Faraji caused chaos in SLAU’s defense, and when they failed to clear their lines, Calvin Otim pounced, punishing them with a clinical finish to bring the game level at 1-1.
Despite SLAU controlling much of the second half, clear-cut chances were hard to come by. IUIU’s Mugambe remained a constant threat, looking to create openings for the hosts, while SLAU’s Mumali tested the defense on a few occasions.
The visitors nearly regained the lead through Kembo Arafat, who combined well with Ronnie Ziraba before firing a shot straight at the IUIU goalkeeper.
However, neither side could find the winning goal, and the match ended in a draw, leaving everything to play for in the return leg.
With the away goals rule in play, SLAU holds a slight advantage heading into the second leg at Kavule on April 10th.
Should the match end goalless, SLAU will advance to the final. However, IUIU has shown they have the fight in them and with home support on SLAU’s side, the battle is far from over.
Meanwhile, attention now shifts to the other semifinal where Uganda Martyrs University will host Bugema on Tuesday, April 8th, in Nkozi. The return leg will take place in Bugema on April 15th, as all four teams continue their quest for UFL glory.
