Jackson Were will continue as President of the Uganda Golf Union after a convincing win at a well-attended Elective Annual General Meeting at the Entebbe Sports Club.

Were secured 16 votes to begin his final term in charge of Ugandan golf for 2026–2028. Committee member Joseph Okudi followed with 11 votes, while outgoing vice president Anthony Agaba managed two in a closely watched contest.

After being declared winner, Were called for unity.

“Elections will always produce a winner and a loser, but for the sake of the game, we must work together,” he said. “We shall work with everyone willing to transform the game.”

A former captain of Mbarara Golf Club, Were first became president in January 2024, replacing Moses Matsiko, whom he had served under as vice president.

His leadership has focused on steady administration and supporting upcountry clubs through careful use of resources.

He also backed the junior team that went on to win the Victoria Cup at Kipipiri Golf Resort, a result that boosted confidence in Uganda’s young golfers.

Paul Charles Rukundo has been elected vice president, replacing Agaba. Adoch Luwum takes over as honorary secretary, Anette Kiconco becomes treasurer, while Paul Habyarimana and NJ Paul complete the executive committee.

NJ Paul, captain of Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club, is among the new faces voted in during a spirited meeting.

The UGU trustees remain Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, businessman Amos Nzeyi and Africa Golf Confederation president Johnson Omollo.

Focus now turns to the course. The new leadership’s first major task will be overseeing Uganda’s campaign at the Victoria Cup, which tees off on Thursday on a par-71 course.

Kenya, led by John Lejirma, will be eager to reclaim regional bragging rights in what promises to be another tight contest.
