Uganda’s long distance star Jacob Kiplimo produced a historic run on Sunday, breaking the half marathon world record at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon in Portugal.
The 27 year old stormed to victory in 57 minutes and 20 seconds, shaving 10 seconds off the previous record held by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha.
Kiplimo controlled the race from the start, leading all the way while maintaining world-record pace.
He passed 5km in 13:28, 10km in 27:00, 15km in 40:52, and 20km in 54:23 before powering to the finish.
Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir finished second, 48 seconds behind the Ugandan.
Governing body World Athletics praised the performance, noting the course meets record standards.
This makes the time eligible for ratification, unlike Kiplimo’s 56:42 run in Barcelona last year which was not recognized.
Uganda Athletics Federation described the run as another historic moment for the country, as fans celebrated their “Bosso” for once again asserting his dominance in distance running.
