With the undeniable buzz around the basketball community in Uganda following the recent appointment as the new head coach of the Gazelles, Nicholas Natuhereza and his technical team get straight to work.

As the team prepares for the upcoming FIBA Zone V Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt, from February 3-10, the inclusion of experienced players alongside promising talents makes for a dynamic squad, signalling a bright future for Ugandan basketball.

Natuhereza, who previously served as an assistant coach under Goran Lojo, is stepping into his role at a pivotal time as the Gazelles aim to secure their place in the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.

Therefore under Natuhereza’s guidance, a formidable 15-player squad has been summoned to kick off training at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

Among the players making headlines is Jamila “Zama” Nansikombi, who is returning to the team after a period of absence while based in the United States.

Nansikombi’s presence adds depth and experience, crucial for the Gazelles as they navigate the competitive landscape of international basketball.

The Gazelles’ roster also includes a significant number of foreign-based talents; Guard Paige Robinson, who was part of the team’s training camp in Germany last year has been included, providing an international edge to the team’s gameplay.

Additionally, standout players such as China-based Jane Asinde, veteran Claire Lamunu, and Melissa Akullu bring a wealth of experience and skills.

On the local front, the squad is spearheaded by Hope Akello, a multiple National Basketball League MVP known for her exceptional playmaking abilities.

The roster also boasts young and promising talents like Zoe Atek, Sarah Namale, and Maxine Anyango, who are eager to make their mark on the national stage.

Their absence has created space for emerging players to showcase their capabilities and contribute to the Gazelles’ success.

The blend of seasoned players and rising stars, spearheaded by the strategic vision of Coach Natuhereza, positions the Gazelles as a formidable competitor in the upcoming qualifiers.
