Uganda’s Junior Silverbacks have officially set off for Kigali, ready to represent the nation at the 2025 FIBA U16 African Championship, which tips off on September 2 and runs until September 14.

For the young side, this is a chance to prove their resilience, talent and hunger to compete among Africa’s best despite a couple of changes in the team that represented Uganda in the qualifiers.

With a untrimmed squad set for Kigali, Rwanda, questions marks are still looming of who will make the cut.

From Kibaha to Kigali: A journey of determination

The Junior Silverbacks booked their ticket after a spirited qualification campaign in Kibaha, Tanzania, in June. It was a journey that tested not just their skills but their character.

Head coach Michael Seger believes the boys have grown since their qualification triumph.

After starting training on August 17, the team has focused on improving shooting, defense, and game awareness. When Seger officially joined camp on August 19, preparations shifted to fine-tuning tactics.

Before the tournament begins, Uganda will play three friendlies against Egypt, Cameroon, and Rwanda to test their readiness and sharpen their competitive edge.

Aiming to rewrite history

Uganda knows how tough continental basketball can be. At the 2023 edition in Tunisia, the Junior Silverbacks managed just one win in five games, fielding only eight players due to logistical setbacks.

That tournament, however, unearthed a gem — Tejan Rugette who has since graduated to the senior Silverbacks and now averages 21.5 minutes per game.

His journey inspires the new crop of players, who are eager to make their mark. With a deeper squad and better preparation this time, expectations are higher.

A tough field awaits

Rwanda hosts the U16 Afrobasket for the first time, and the competition will be fierce.

Defending champions Guinea return to protect their title, while five-time winners Egypt remain favorites.

Uganda joins a strong field that includes Angola, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and the hosts.

With only the top two teams earning a spot at the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup in Turkey, every game will count.

The dream is alive

For the Junior Silverbacks, this is bigger than basketball. It’s about growth, exposure, and putting Ugandan hoops on the continental map.

If they succeed, they won’t just be chasing victory, they’ll be inspiring the next generation and proving Uganda belongs among Africa’s basketball elite.
