Buganda Kingdom has launched the first-ever Kabaka’s 32nd Coronation Badminton Championship, adding a fresh chapter to its support for sports and community welfare.
The launch took place at Bulange, Mengo, led by Robert Sserwanga, Minister for Arts, Youth, and Sports. The tournament is set for August 8–10 at the Lugogo Indoor Arena in Lugogo.
Over 200 players are expected to compete across age groups from juniors (U13 to U19) to seniors (35–70) and corporates, creating a diverse and exciting field.
Uganda Badminton Association CEO Simon Mugabi called the event a key step in growing the sport.
“This tournament represents the future of badminton in Uganda. With support from Buganda, we’re giving players a platform to shine,” he said.
Top names like Fadilla Shamika, Gladys Mbabazi, Reagan Nsubunga, Muzafuru Lubega, and Tracy Naluwooza are expected to feature.
Beyond the game, the championship will promote HIV/AIDS awareness, with a focus on male responsibility in protecting women, echoing the Kingdom’s broader health efforts.
Sserwanga applauded the badminton association for using sport to drive positive change.
“Sports help us nurture talent, build unity, and improve our people’s well-being,” he said.
The Kabaka’s Coronation Championship now stands as a celebration of sport, culture, and purpose.
