Despite loads of chances on either side, Kabale University and YMCA were not sharp enough to utilize their chances. The failure to kill off the University Football League game gave birth to a barren draw.
For Kabale, goalkeeper Derrick Wutwali was the hero with some fantastic saves. The side’s return to the League started on a high note as they found the back of the net in the 13th minute, only for the goal to be disallowed due to an offside offence .
A few minutes later, YMCA institute also saw their chances to take the lead go to waste following the same offense, offside.
YMCA kept pushing but Kabale goalie Wutwali was always in the right position to execute his duties. YMCA’s forward Benon Kigenyi and Banton Kankazi had arguably the best chances of the game.
Wutwali’s superb performance was enough to keep his side in the game at half time.
In the second half, with 20 minutes left, Kabale University had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Christian Muhindo met Miracle Abaho’s cross with YMCA goalkeeper Peter Isabirye off the line but the visitors captain Wasswa Jesse made a crucial clearance to save the day.
The draw means that all teams in Group A are still searching for their first win in the 2024 University Football League.
Elsewhere, Uganda Christian University and St Lawrence University played to a 1-1 draw. The league is officially underway, and resumes on 25th September 2024 with a Group F tie between Mbarara University of Science and Technology and Makerere University Business School in Mbarara at 3PM.
