As the Uganda Premier League heats up on Matchday 23, all eyes will be on the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium where Wakiso Giants host Maroons FC in a clash with high stakes on both ends of the table.

For Maroons defender Apollo Kakogwe, this fixture is more than just a battle for points, it’s a return to familiar ground.

Kakogwe who spent over two and a half seasons with the Purple Sharks, is relishing the chance to face his former side. Ahead of the game, he shared his excitement and confidence in an emotional interview.

“Wakiso Giants is a club I once called home,” Kakogwe said.

“I’m happy to go back there, I’ll be meeting some good friends and former teammates. It’ll be a tough game but as a team, we’re ready. We’ve prepared well and want to give our fans a reason to cheer.”

Maroons come into the tie in high spirits having claimed back-to-back wins against Lugazi and Express.

With 33 points, they sit within touching distance of the top four and could break in if URA slips against Bright Stars.

The Stars, fresh off a 3-1 win over Police, face a URA side that’s eyeing a leap to third place. Meanwhile, Wakiso Giants, buoyed by a crucial win over Mbale Heroes are battling to avoid the drop.

With just 17 points, coach Steven Bengo’s side needs every result to count, and a win over Maroons could bring them within three points of safety.

However, Kakogwe emphasized his team’s belief, especially after having faced Wakiso twice already this season, once in the league and once in the Uganda Cup.

“We lost to them at home in the first round, but we knocked them out of the Uganda Cup,” said Kakogwe.

“That gives us belief. We’ve trained well, and we’re coming in focused.”

Kakogwe ended his message with a passionate call to fans;

“We need our supporters with us. Travel with us, cheer us on, we’ll fight to win.”

The day will see fourth-placed URA host Bright Stars, who are currently 15th on the 16-team Log, at the Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo.
