The defending FUFA Women Super League champions Kampala Queens FC came from behind to beat Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC 2-1 on Sunday morning at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
Substitutes Shamirah Nalugya and Catherine Nagadya‘s second-half goals cancelled Latifah Nakasi‘s first-half goal as Kampala Queens started their title defense with a narrow win.
Nakasi netted in the 27th minute to put the visitors in the lead, putting the ball at the back of the net on the rebound after Sumayah Nalumu‘s powerful shot hit the crossbar.
Kampala Queens coach Charles Ssenyange introduced Nalugya and Asia Nakibuka immediately into the second half, and a few minutes later, introduced former Uganda Martyrs captain Nagadya in search of goals.
His substitutes worked as striker Fazila Ikwaput won a controversial penalty, which Nalugya stepped up and converted to equalize.
Uganda Martyrs responded with another goal, but Nakasi was flagged offside. Nakasi later had a chance to restore the lead but failed to execute in a one-on-one situation.
Uganda Martyrs substitute Kevin Nakachwa also had a chance to score, but her well-taken free kick was denied by the crossbar.
Kampala Queens then made the most of their pressure when substitute Catherine Nagadya scored a late winner.
In the next games, Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC will host Rines SS WFC on Saturday, October 21, while Kampala Queens FC will visit She Makerere on Sunday, October 22.
