Kampala Hockey Club Swans ended a lifetime wait for a league title over the weekend after winning the 2023 National Hockey League in the most dominant of ways.
The Swans have had a memorable campaign! Not only have they ended the season as the only unbeaten team in their division, they also end it as both the best attacking and defensive side.
With 86 goals to their name, KHC scored the most goals in the division and their five conceded was the least let in by any team in both the Men and Women’s division.
When they walked onto the field to face Makerere University on Saturday in their last game, the word ‘champions’ was written all over them because nothing realistic was stopping them from lifting their first ever league trophy.
KHC entered the game as table leaders, three points ahead of second Placed Weatherhead. The permutations were that for them to be denied the league title, they had to lose and Weatherhead win their game by 37 goals.
Mathematically, that is a possibility. Realistically, there was no way that was happening. They in that regard were champions in wait even before the last game kicked off.
Like explained above, KHC didn’t even have to win to be crowned champions, but no, they wanted to end the season in style.
They annihilated Makerere 12-0, with siblings Lucky Akello and Winnie Alaro each bagging four goals. Sanne Swinkles added two, while Franziska Masenbrink and Sarah Ahabwe each scored one.
The four goals ensured Akello ended the season as the league’s top scorer with 27 in total.
Kampala Swan wrap up the league with 38 points three ahead of second placed Weatherhead and eleven ahead of Wananchi who had won this league a record five times in a row.
