At the 2024 UMEA Solidarity Games, netball powerhouses kept their day one on track as defending champion Greenlight Islamic opened with a double win.
Hopeful challenger also the 2024 champions Kawanda SS picked up double wins and 2023 champions Ngando SS also kept its head high.
The games are taking place from April 3rd to 6th at Nkoma UMEA Secondary School, the main host, while the games on day one were witnessed at different courts in Mbale.
Greenlight Islamic started by overpowering last year’s host, Namagabi UMEA SS, by 17-11 and went on to replay last year’s final, again winning 17-11.
In remembrance, Greenlight defeated Hamdan Girls by 1 after a tense 22-21 final that saw the Nansana-based school bagging their first netball trophy at the UMEA Solidarity Games.
However, last year’s finalist, Hamdan Girls, had already defeated Bugembe Islamic with a dominant 24-1 before getting overpowered by Greenlight Islamic.
Meanwhile, Kawanda SS was also at pace, winning two games, beating Bilal Islamic 19-7 and Kasawo SS 19-5, continuing their intimidating performances.
Elsewhere, 2023 champions Ngando SS started humbly but with aggression, beating Kakukugulu Memorial by 18-9. Gombe SS also shone with two wins over Seke SS with a narrow 13-11 and a dominant 21-1 over Mariam High.
Kadugala SS was another top performer from day one as they tormented Kakukugulu Memorial by 17-6, while host Nkoma UMEA SS suffered at the hands of Wamatovu SS as the game ended 15-13.
