Uganda’s growing influence in continental sport took another step forward on Thursday when Godwin Kayangwe was elected to the Executive Committee of Rugby Africa.

The breakthrough came on February 27, 2026, during the 17th General Assembly of Rugby Africa held in Kampala.

Delegates from across the continent gathered in the capital, and by the close of the meeting Kayangwe had secured a seat on the Executive Board, filling a vacancy created during the assembly.

For Uganda, the election was no routine administrative change. It signaled the country’s growing voice in African rugby.

Kayangwe’s new role places Uganda at the centre of decision making on the continent.

As a member of the Executive Committee, he will help shape policies, competitions and development programmes that guide the sport across Africa.

His campaign focused on strengthening Uganda’s influence within continental structures and accelerating rugby growth, from grassroots systems to elite performance pathways.

Hosting the General Assembly added weight to Uganda’s bid and capped a week that highlighted the country’s rising profile in the game.

At home, Kayangwe continues to serve as President of Uganda Rugby Union, now operating as Uganda Rugby. He first assumed office in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023 for a second term running until 2027, a period marked by structural reforms, youth development and efforts to improve international competitiveness.

He also serves as First Vice President of the Uganda Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Uganda, a position he retained after re-election in March 2025.

Uganda’s hosting of the 17th General Assembly was widely seen as proof of its organisational strength and ambition. Kayangwe’s election during the same meeting showed a shift from participation to influence.

With representation on the Rugby Africa Executive Committee, Uganda now has a direct voice in shaping the future of the sport on the continent at a time when African rugby is pushing for stronger global competitiveness, commercial growth and wider participation.
