Uganda Rugby Union president Godwin Kayangwe has praised unity and shared ambition as the driving force behind the launch of the 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership, calling it another important step in the sport’s steady rise.

Speaking at the season unveiling in Kampala, Kayangwe said the February 7 launch marked the start of a new calendar.

For him, it signaled a fresh chapter for Ugandan rugby, one built on belief, direction and collective purpose.

“The launch of the 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership, together with our partners, is another big step forward,” Kayangwe said.

“What makes it special is the unity, players, clubs, sponsors and fans all pulling in the same direction to deliver a strong season.”

His message set the tone for a competition expected to deliver intensity and growth.

The opening weekend will feature nine Premier matches, kicking off a five month campaign showcasing the best of domestic rugby.

The 2026 Premiership will feature 12 men’s teams and seven women’s teams, reflecting the Union’s continued push for inclusivity and competitive balance.

The men’s title race includes traditional heavyweights Black Pirates, Heathens, KOBs and Hippos, alongside Buffaloes, Rhinos, Warriors, Kakira Simbas, Impis, Walukuba Barbarians, Victoria Sharks and Plascon Mongers.

In the women’s league, Black Pearls, Thunderbirds, Nile Rapids, Panthers, Ewes, She Wolves and Avengers will battle for honours.

Kayangwe stressed that the Premiership is about more than results.

“This is about building a strong, competitive rugby environment that can last,” he said, pointing to improved safeguarding, stronger partnerships and growing fan support as key pillars of the season.
