Two of Uganda’s brightest basketball stars are trading the court for the boardroom as the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) heads to the polls this Friday September 26 at Uganda Christian University.
KCCA Leopards forward Martha Soigi and JKL Dolphins Guard Brenda Ekone both proven leaders are looking to shape university sports policy and governance nationwide.
Their nominations underline a growing trend of active athletes stepping into sports administration.
Soigi, a stalwart for Kampala University and a former player with the national team, is running for 1st Vice President.
Known for her relentless defense and calm leadership, she faces competition from Mustapha Nsubuga of Mountain of the Moon University, who is also contesting the Vice President (Technical) seat against UCU’s Samuel Lukaire.
Ekone, a University of Kisubi alumna and one of Uganda’s most decorated women’s players, stands unopposed for Assistant General Secretary, virtually guaranteeing her a key role in guiding university sports for the next four years, a major win for athlete representation.
This election marks a turning point for AUUS. Long-serving president Peninah Kabenge Aligawesa is stepping aside, leaving a two-way race for the top seat between George Wagoogo of Kyambogo University and Dr. Agnes Baluka Massajja of Busitema University. Their contest will shape the federation’s direction through 2029.
Other hotly contested posts include General Secretary, where incumbent Patrick Ssebuliba faces challenges from Dr. Baluka, Hilary Godfrey Kimbugwe of Makerere University Business School, and David Busobozi of Uganda Martyrs University.
Several regional representatives, such as Eastern’s Helon Haruna Kebba and Northern’s Francis Opiyo, have already secured their seats unopposed.
Affiliated with the National Council of Sports and the International University Sports Federation, AUUS oversees Uganda’s university teams at regional and world competitions. The incoming committee will carry that responsibility through 2029.
