Kampala Old Boys (KOBs) Rugby Football Club has relaunched the Kitaka 10s to celebrate 60 years of existence.

KOBs is one of the most decorated clubs in Uganda, boasting 13 Premiership titles, 9 Uganda Cup titles and National 7s championships – having been established in 1963.

“It is because of this 60-year journey that we are launching the Edward Kitaka 10-a-side tournament today. The Kitaka 10’s will take place at the end of September 2023 as part of the celebrations to mark 60 years of our existence,” reads a statement from the club.

“The Kitaka 10-Aside international and invitational rugby tournament was started in 2006 and 2007 in memory of the KOBs RFC Patron and Chairman, Edward Kitaka. Over the years, the tournament morphed into Kitaka 7s, which was held as the last circuit of the Uganda Rugby Union 7s calendar.”

This year’s edition will be held on 30th September 2023 and 1st October 2023 at Legends Rugby Club, where we’ll see five rugby clubs from Kenya and 11 rugby clubs from Uganda that will compete for the prestigious main cup. The ladies, too, will be represented, with four teams competing in a round-robin tournament in which the top two will qualify for the ladies’ main cup final.

“These matches will provide an opportunity for players to showcase their skills and strengthen the bond of sportsmanship. They will also serve as a testament to the enduring spirit, growth and competitiveness of rugby in Uganda,” noted Dr Tonny Livingstone Luggya, KOBs RFC Chairman.

KOBs, in the same breath, announced the acquisition of new principal health partners in HUMAN Diagnostics Uganda Limited. They hope to organise several activities with them aimed at improving the health-seeking behaviour of Ugandans and contributing to the development of rugby, which includes HIV screening by Human Diagnostics, rugby skilling sessions and friendly matches with university sides (Impis, UCU Shepherds, Victoria University).

The KOBs are coming off a 15s season that saw a fall to Heathens in the Uganda Cup and losing out on claiming a 14th Premiership win on the final day and a 7s season where they saw multiple stars ejected from the team just when they were stabilising at the top of the log.
