This week, Gazelle Claire Lamunu took to her social media to express her joy and pride in a basketball project she set out to do in Gulu.

“A dream turning into reality in Gulu,” said a short, proud post from Claire Lamunu’s X/Twitter.

In 2021, Claire teamed up with World Embrace, an organisation working in Gulu, to build a children’s park with four basketball playgrounds.

At the time, World Embrace had already purchased the land for which this dream facility was to be built and teamed up with Lamunu to raise the USD 60,000 required to construct the playgrounds.

“When I’m doing these clinics in Gulu, I look in these kids’ eyes and see myself in them. They can have even better opportunities, including learning basketball skills when they’re much younger,” said Claire Lamunu at the start of the partnership with World Embrace.

Claire Lamunu has had quite the year with the Uganda ladies basketball team, the Gazelles, who, at the end of the AfroBasket competition, were the second most improved team in FIBA rankings from 2021 to 2023.

Gulu has continued to churn out sports personalities for Uganda across various disciplines, and Claire Lamunu wants to ensure that the city keeps giving basketball stars.
