As Uganda and Turkey further strengthen relations between the two countries, Turkish Ambassador to Uganda Mehmet Fatih AK has cited former footballer the Late Majidu Musisi as the starting point of the relationship between the two countries.
He was speaking at the Grand opening ceremony of Hoima City Stadium in Mubunyoro on 21 December 2025 which was constructed by the Turkish Company SUMMA.
“This is a testimony of Uganda and Turkey continuing to partner, with this stadium put in place to advance the growth of the sports industry in Uganda mostly football, Uganda has produced remarkable players and Majid Musisi remains an Icon of these two countries,” he said.
Majidu Musisi was born and raised in Kampala Suburbs to become a prominent striker starting his career in Uganda to became the first Ugandan player to go for professional football in Europe after joining Stade Rennes of France in 1992.
Following his successful two-year stint in France, Musisi switched his football trade to Turkish giants Bursaspor in 1994 before later joining Çanakkale Dardanelspor in 1997.
After five years in Turkiye, Majid Musisi returned to his home country as an icon with 60 goals from 156 Turkish Super League games for both clubs.
Speaking on the cause of the day, His Excellency the Ambassador of Turkiye in Uganda continued his speech on the stadium,” By reports, I have learned that during the construction of this stadium, thousands of Ugandans found jobs with 80 percent of the construction workers being Ugandans. Therefore this is not just a stadium but a turning point in different lives.”
