Peace Lekuru is already making headlines in England’s Betfred Women’s Super League, just weeks after joining York Valkyrie.

The Uganda Rugby 7s captain became the first Ugandan to sign for a Women’s Super League team and she’s made an immediate impact.

Calling the experience a “dream come true,” the 25-year-old said she’s been warmly welcomed in York.

“There’s no difference between home and here,” she said. “They’re friendly, supportive, and want you to grow. I’m really enjoying it.”

Lekuru stood out in her debut, helping Valkyrie to a 28–4 win over Leigh Leopards despite playing out of position.

A week later, she powered over for a try in a 26–6 victory against Huddersfield her first in the league.

For her, this isn’t just personal success.

“I feel like I’m lifting Uganda’s flag,” she said. “When people say, ‘I want to be like Peace,’ that’s a lot to carry but it means everything.”

Lekuru’s arrival at Valkyrie also reflects Director of Rugby Lindsay Anfield’s connection to African rugby, which began with the Tag Rugby Trust in Zambia in 2006. Their partnership is about more than sport, it’s about building something lasting.

When asked what keeps her going, Lekuru’s answer was simple;

“It’s the friendships, the passion. It feels like family.”
