With the Uganda Cranes winning two CHAN 2024 matches so far, the Local Organizing Committee has recommended that the match-winning bonuses promised by the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, go directly to the accounts of the team members.

Just before the kickoff of the CHAN 2024 tournament, the President raised a total of 1.2 billion for each match the team wins.

Despite the team starting with a 3-0 defeat to Algeria, in the second match they managed to beat Guinea 3-0, and then in the most recent match, they beat Niger 2-0, all matches played at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole.

After three battles, the Uganda Cranes are now expecting a gratuity of 2.4 billion while still having one match left against South Africa on 18 August.

Following the development, CHAN/AFCON Local Organizing Committee spokesperson Denis Mugimba gave the committee’s views during a press conference held at the Uganda Media Center on 14 August.

“As the local organizing committee, we are not responsible for the President’s pledges, but as per the meeting we have held, we recommend that the money should be wired directly to the accounts of players, coaches, and other staff on the team.”

This move comes amid growing public distrust in Uganda regarding the delivery of promised funds and benefits.
