Lubaga Zone Boys football: UMHSL defeats Mengo SS Annex on penalties in Final

As the journey to the 2026 USSSA Boys Football Championship, which is expected to come in May at Lira Town College, Lubaga zone found in Kampala region, Uganda Martyrs’ High School Lubaga won the zone title by defeating Mengo SS Annex 4-3 on penalties, which decided the final that ended 0-0.

The final match took place at Mengo SS, and the hosts played wearing red jerseys, black shorts, and stockings, while the visitors were wearing blue jerseys throughout.

The match started with Mengo SS Annex making a number of attacks through Ibrahim Mubiru, but Lubaga goalkeeper Patrick Ssebaggala was alert to prevent the hosts from scoring.

After the first half ended 0-0, UMHSL played well in the second half, trying to guide their attacks through Lucky John, but Mengo SS goalkeeper Cyrus Ssemakula was also an arrow in keeping his team in the game until the final whistle.

After both schools showed unsatisfactory performance they went straight to penalty shootouts and each team managed to score the first straight attempts with Medie Kavuma, Hamim Mandela, and Gracewill Akampulira converting for Lubaga while Don Ssekabira, Cyrus Ssemakula, and Nana Malual converted for Mengo SS Annex.

On the fourth penalty, it is where Mengo SS Annex’s problems started after Ssebaggala saved Abdulbasti Dombo’s penalty but Ssemakula immediately denied Ivan Garenga’s effort though Ibrahim Mubiru came to save Mengo SS Annex and hit it above the goal to send the field which was full-packed by Mengo SS students, teachers, and fans in silence, while UMHSL players, coaches, and teachers were jubilating.

In the search for the third team to represent Lubaga Zone at Kampala Region, Lubiri SS defeated Mengo SS 7-0 with Marith Abuyo and Bony Namiti scoring a hat trick each while Kat Wuor scored the seventh goal.

While Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga, Mengo SS Annex, and Lubiri SS from Lubaga Zone joined Kawempe Muslim, Kazo Hill, and Caltec Academy Makerere from Kawempe Zone, Kibuli SS, Kakungulu Memorial, and Buziga Islamic from Makindye Zone await those from Nakawa and Central Zone for the Kampala Region Boys Football Championship later this month.

Individually, Ibrahim Mubiru of Mengo SS was the best player at the Zone Championship, Marith Abuyo of Lubiri SS was the Top Scorer with 9 goals from 5 games while Patrick Ssebaggala of Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga was the best Goalkeeper.

Following individual awards, all school teams that will represent the zone at Region contributed to fair play by giving a guard of honor with Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga setting the example for Mengo SS Annex, and both Mengo SS Annex and Lubiri SS adopting the guard of honor for the zone champions.
