Lugazi FC started their 2023/24 Betpawa Big League season with a perfect 3-0 win against Ndejje University at home, despite wasting several chances.
Sam Ssemugugu scored a brace and Derrick Mwanje added one as Lugazi handed Ndejje University their second defeat of the season.
Ssemugugu opened the scoring in the 6th minute, but his goal was ruled offside. He made amends later in the half, however, with a beautiful goal after receiving a long ball from defender Savio Kabugo.

Lugazi had several more chances to extend their lead before the break, but two goals were flagged offside and others were wasted by Moses Buga and Akodi Solomon.
Ronald Ssempala almost doubled the lead in the 57th minute, but his shot went inches wide.
Ssemugugu doubled Lugazi’s lead in the 65th minute after Ndejje University goalkeeper failed to save the ball from the forbidden area.

Samuel Nsubuga and Shafik Kilyowa both had chances to make it 3-0 for Lugazi, but their shots were saved by goalkeeper Eric Kimbowa and hit the crossbar, respectively.
Mwanje finally sealed the victory for Lugazi in the 77th minute with a smart finish after receiving the ball from Mubarak inside the box.
Ndejje University’s best chance of the game came in the 80th minute, but Kayongo’s shot kissed the crossbar and went outside.

The win took Lugazi to the top of the table, while Ndejje University dropped to the bottom.
Ndejje University lost 4-3 to Karo Karungi in their opening league game while Lugazi FC was playing their first league game this season.
What the Ndejje coach said
Despite the second loss in two games, Ndejje University tactician Raymond Komakech is optimistic that his team will achieve their goal this season.
“We have lost the second game in the row but we are still strong that we will gain promotion to topflight.”

“We have young players who are doing great work to fit in the system and once they fit in, we’re going to win as many games as possible to achieve our goal. We are not worried, two games don’t describe our finishing position.” Brave Komakech said.
The betPawa Big League will resume this Saturday as Jinja North United will be hosting Police FC at Kyabazinga Stadium.
