Yasin Wasswa justified his starting berth at flyhalf by gathering 20 points to lead Jinja Hippos to a 30-24 victory over Toyota Buffaloes in the Soggy Cup Final.
The Uganda Rugby Championship game that also doubled as the second round of the Soggy Cup was a game of two halves with the Hippos dominating the first half and Buffaloes picking gas down their tanks to pick a losing bonus point.
Dam Waters was electric as Jinja Hippos rushed into a 24-09 first half lead against the Toyota Buffaloes in what was a flawless first half for promising fly half Yasin Wasswa.
Meddy Bagalana, Owen Mugogo and Yasin Wasswa all crossed the white wash for the hosts with Wasswa’s boot converting a penalty and all tries earning him the man of the match award.
In the second half it looked like Hippos might slip to their first defeat in the first game of the campaign, but they were able to dig themselves out of the hole.
The second half kicked off with a rejuvenated Buffaloes team taking the game by the horns after the introduction of Humphrey Ndahura who brought his best flyhalf game to the Jinja Hippos.
Two quick penalties to drive the game closer from 24-9 to 27-12 made the Buffaloes believe they could get to the peak of the game.
An unconverted try by Ogwang Ronald brought the game closer for the Buffaloes before they grounded in the middle after a well worked forwards try putting the game at 30-24 after two well converted penalties by Wasswa giving the fans a game of two halves.
The Jinja Hippos are leaving their home for the first time this season as they attack Kyadondo to face off with new boys on the block, Victoria University Sharks who have what looks like one of the strongest team in the league. The Sharks would wish to follow their 22-16 victory against the Kampani Eagles with a win against the high flying Jinja Hippos to re- announce their entry into the National Rugby Championship.
