Makerere University claimed a 2-1 victory over Ndejje to finish atop Group C of the University Football League.
The win, though not essential as they had already qualified for the quarterfinals, ensured they ended the group stages with nine points, two more than second-placed Muni.
Ndejje finished bottom of the group with two points. Kyambogo, who could have been the fourth team in the group, were banned for two years due to hooliganism.
Shemah Mukhwana and Male Musa were the scorers for Makerere, while Devis Musinguzi netted a consolation for Ndejje.
Makerere assistant coach Hanington Ssebwalunyo praised his team’s teamwork for the victory.
“I’m grateful to my players and technical team for their teamwork in achieving these results. We’ve only lost once in the group stages. Qualifying is a great motivation for the players, and we’re confident we’ll be even stronger in the quarterfinals,” Ssebwalunyo said.
He acknowledged that they need to improve if they are to perform at their best in the knockout stages.
“We have a lot to work on. We’ll prepare better and address some of the issues we’ve identified. We need to be more clinical in attack and defend better. We hadn’t conceded a goal until the last two games, so we know there’s room for improvement,” he added.
Ndejje captain Derrick Bukenya believes his team did not prepare well for the competition.
“We had a lot of ups and downs. We weren’t as well-prepared as our opponents. We’ll look to address those shortcomings next season. We tried our best to execute our game plan, but it wasn’t enough,” Bukenya explained.
