Ugandan rugby has something to cheer about. Daniel Malcolm Okello, a promising young player from Heathens RFC, is heading to the Rhinos Rugby Academy in San Clemente, California, one of the top rugby development programs in the U.S.

The Heathens confirmed the news in a club statement this week, proudly sharing that Okello had earned his spot.

Their message, stamped with the club’s iconic Viking logo, celebrated both the player’s achievement and the club’s growing reputation for nurturing top talent.

For Okello, this marks a major step. The Rhinos Academy is known for shaping future professionals through intense training and a focus on both sport and academics. He now joins a list of international players who’ve passed through its ranks.

The Heathens thanked the Rhinos Academy for recognizing Ugandan talent and investing in it.

Their parting message: “Congratulations, Daniel Malcolm Okello. Fly our flag high.”

From Lugogo to California, Okello’s journey is proof that Ugandan dreams can go far.
