In a thrilling Week 9 of the 2024 Masaza Cup, two outstanding goalkeeping performances stole the show. Busiro’s Lawrence Kimera and Kyadondo’s Eric Kaweesi both earned Man of the Match awards for their heroic displays for their teams.

Kimera played a key role in Busiro’s 0-0 draw against Mawokota at Ssentema Ssaza ground in Masengere group, making multiple saves and organizing his defense.

His performance plus contributions from Peter Kaye and young defender Isaac Ntagugira were instrumental in preventing Mawokota from securing maximum points and sealing a quarterfinal place as one of the best two third placed teams.

Elsewhere in Masengere group, Busujju edged out Kabula 1-0 thanks to Eddie Bulwanyi’s second goal in consecutive games. Kabula’s loss condemend them to second place, vacating the top spot for Busujju.

In the same group which also has Mawokota and Busiro, Ssese on Saturday defeated Buvuma 3-0 courtesy of goals from Marvin Tumukunde, Diara Umar Muzungu and Sabil Muhammad.

Bulange group

Meanwhile, Kaweesi helped Kyadondo defeat Buluuli 2-1 at Kakooge, making crucial saves and contributing to the team’s attacking play. This victory turned Kyadondo into favourites to progress over Buluuli with Isaac Ssenyunja and Dathan Mubiru scoring for the visitors while Robert Ssewanyana picked his 7th of the campaign.

Buluuli is now winless in the 4 games of the second round, losing two in a row and drawing the other two. The bad form has seen the Nakasongola based county give up top spot in Bulange group, which they have occupied since match day 1.

The group remains tightly contested, with Buddu taking the lead after fighting from a goal down to defeat Bugerere 2-1 at Kitovu Arena. Joseph Kayondo scored a penalty for Buddu to cancel out Marvin Busulwa’s early goal for Bugerere and then Mike Weraga found the game winner with a few minutes remaining. Kyadondo and Buluuli are also in the mix, and the final group stage matches will determine their fate.

Bugerere is now two points behind Butambala who came to life against defending champions Bulemeezi to register a 4-0 win on Saturday at Kibibi SS, making it two wins from their last two games.

Muganzirwazza group

Ivan Kalyowa got a brace to his name, while Julius Kalule Kato scored another as visitors Kyaggwe refined their form to beat Mawogola 3-1. Jamil Kayizi scored the consolation goal for the hosts.

Gomba also continued their late form by beating Ssingo 1-0 through Felix Wafula’s goal while Buweekula and Kooki shared the spoils as Sharafa Mukiibi and Frederick Kakande scored for either side in a 1-1 draw.

As the Masaza Cup enters the final stages, the competition is heating up. The battle for a place in the quarterfinals is intense, and the remaining matches will determine the teams that will advance to the knockout stage.
