The concluded Buganda Schools Championship has attracted mass participation, with over 3500 students from 87 schools taking part in 10 sports disciplines, representing over 180 teams.
With the impressive turnout, Christopher Bwanika, the Buganda Attorney General who represented the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, tipped the championship to be satisfying, considering Buganda’s aim.
“As the government of Buganda, we aim to develop mass talents, and in this Buganda Schools Championship, the performances have been of the quality that can make Buganda and Uganda proud. We have seen high-quality talents, and we believe our country will benefit from these special talents. It is always great that Kabaka allowed us to have this healthy championship in Buganda.”
This year’s championship witnessed improvement both in numbers and the level of competition, with top sporting schools at both primary and secondary levels, like Wampewo Ntakke, Mbogo Schools, and Buddo SS, performing better than last year.
The successful championship, which took place from Wednesday, March 11, to Sunday, March 15, has seen schools taking part in sports disciplines such as Football, Judo, Netball, Volleyball, Badminton, Handball, Scrabble, Table Tennis, and others.
During the climax, Buganda Minister for Youth, Sports and Art, Robert Sserwanga, shed light on future championships:
“Kabaka of Buganda commanded us to develop mass talents, and we have succeeded significantly this year 2026, though we still look for extra growth. We hope to pull more schools into the championship, and we are also looking forward to have more sports disciplines.”
Hajji Twahir Kitezaala, the vice President at USSSA, appreciated Buganda for digging deeper into USSSA’s task from the government to develop mass sport,
“It has been a great event, with a good turn up, as USSSA since the government tasked us to develop sports talentโ
“Schools, Buganda is continuously playing a vital role in supporting us,”
Meanwhile, host school’s director Hajji Ahmed Maseruka has left his hand open whenever Buganda happens to call him to host the championship, having done it for the past three consecutive years.
“We are proud that Buganda keeps choosing us to host this championship. We are looking to have mass sport because sports is very important in the education sector. That is why we put much effort into putting the best facilities we can in place so that we can continue developing sports. For this championship, we are in Buganda, we have the needed facilities, and we are ready to continue hosting.”
Wampeewo Ntake School collected the most trophy tally, 6, from the championship, while Hill Preparatory School, Buddo SS, and Mbogo Schools also pulled multiple trophies from the championship.
