Goalkeeper Gilbert Mazige says Uganda’s U17 team is ready to bounce back from their narrow opening defeat when they face Chile on Saturday in their second FIFA U17 World Cup group match at Aspire Zone Pitch 8. Kick-off is at 3:30 PM (EAT).
The Cubs began their World Cup journey with a spirited but heartbreaking 2–1 loss to Canada, conceding late in the game.
With qualification still within reach, the young Ugandans are determined to fight back and keep their dream alive.

For Mazige, playing on the world stage was special but he wants more.
“It felt amazing to play my first World Cup game. It’s every player’s dream, and I was happy for the chance,” Mazige said.

“I gave my best to help the team, but maybe that’s what God had planned. Now our focus is on Chile, I’ll give everything to help us win and qualify.”
Head coach Brian Ssenyondo echoed Mazige’s belief, saying the team’s goals remain unchanged despite the early setback.
“Our main target is to progress from the group stages. Football always gives you another chance, and tomorrow is ours,” said Ssenyondo.
“We played well against Canada and fought hard. Now we just need to learn and do better.”
Ssenyondo also hinted at a tactical approach to unlock Chile’s strong defense.
“They play in a 1-5-3-2 formation, very compact and disciplined but we’ve studied them and know where to find spaces,” he explained.
The Cubs completed their final training session at Al Thumama Stadium in high spirits, encouraged by FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim, who has been with the team since the tournament began.
