Men Hockey League: Weatherhead stays top after draw with Wananchi

The National Hockey League Lugogo derby game between Weatherhead and Wananchi ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Braces from Thomas Opio and Maxwell Byamukama ensured the game which was played at Lugogo ends square.

The two sides went into the game unbeaten in the league, and when they met, they were unable to separate themselves.

Byamukama opened the scoring for the defending champions Wananchi, but Opio leveled matters in the 17th minute, before handing his team the lead a minute later.

It was time for Wananchi to search for an equalizer and they got it in the 35th minute with Byamukama’s second.

Maxwell Mugisha got Weatherhead’s third, but Andrew Lubega ensured the spoils were shared with his 45th-minute goal.

It was the first time Weatherhead were conceding more than one goal in a game this season. The side had let in only one goal before this encounter.

Weatherhead remains placed top of the table, but that’s just on goal difference as they possess the same number of points as Wananchi.

Rockets best Kampala Hockey Cub in thriller

In the other games played in the men’s division, the Rockets edged Kampala Hockey Club (KHC) in another entertaining affair.

Brian Ofoyimungu bagged a brace for the Rockets in this game. KHC took the lead through Stewart Kavuma and Gerald Kairu’s quarter-two goals.

Daniel Kyaligonza started the comeback in the 38th minute that Siraji Ramathan completed in the 57th minute.

Aaron Mutenyo scored the third goal for KHC before Ofoyimungu exploded to hand his side a hard-fought 4-3 win.

Makerere Stingers

Elsewhere, City Lions drew 1-1 against Makerere University. Player-coach Ali Mohammed scored for his side while Andrew Ndihaye netted for the University side.

Rockets dislodged KHC from 3rd place with that victory while Lions climbed to 5th. Makerere maintained the 7th position.
